American Beauty

I spent 3 months at the Mac Dowell Colony in New Hampshire in 2001. The residency coincided in the aftermath of 911, an extraordinary time throughout the country. During my residency situated in the beautiful landscape of Peterborough, I used the time to travel around (renting a car every weekend) to talk and photograph communities in their anger and grief of 911. American Beauty, a young woman US Marine marches in the Veterans Parade. Norman, homeless from Lowell in Massachusetts sitting on a bench in the early winter sun, who talked about Hasselblad cameras, which he once owed. The Duck Hunter & Mother on their porch. Billy Jean from the local Walmart, who had never been asked to be photographed.
