The City 2001 -2007

These portraits were taken in and around a small area of Limerick in 2001, shortly after I had arrived back to Ireland from New York. Working with a medium format camera, the city was an open page of curiosity. My intentions were straightforward and uncomplicated. Photograph with conviction as I encounter moments with full participation from the person being photographed. I happened upon a moment, an opportunity, the resultant photograph suggests what we are willing to assume, on the basis of outward appearance, about the person walking past us on the street. (little has changed now in 2026). What separates presentation from representation, real, or record, from fantasy? Constructing photographs that forefront this ambiguity, we question perceived notions about identity, to determine if there is something in the unconscious that reinforces our assumptions and prejudices vis-à-vis the "other".

Do the photographs ask us to question our individual identity? If so, they succeed in their intent. Limerick 2001
